But let’s start with why I even care for this to meet any standards. The simple reason is that we want our delivery to meet our client’s expectations—and surpass them more often than not. We need to grow and improve at each step, and the least we should do is be consistent in the promise vs. delivery. And for that, the entire team’s delivery quality matters. We want to tell better stories and shoot better portraits while accounting for all the client’s requirements. This is where Candid photography qualities play a crucial role, ensuring that every shot feels natural, emotive, and true to the moment.
To ensure all this happens, I have to play the role of a mentor for the team that works with me on various projects. Sometimes, senior members in the team also guide the junior members on different aspects. But what qualities truly matter when I consider mentoring a candid photographer? Let’s explore the best traits for a candid photographer that define a promising professional in this field.
Candid photography qualities
1. An eye on the story.
Wedding photography storytelling thrives on candid moments. A good candid photographer must be able to visualize the entire set they shoot at a wedding while being in the moment. Have we captured the best moments? How do these moments connect? Are these photographs an accurate representation of the day? And importantly, if shooting in a team, are the sets building up to create a compelling story for the client? This awareness of the story being captured is an essential quality for any candid photographer.
2. Peripheral vision and attention to detail
A fleeting glance, a shared laugh, or a tear rolling down a cheek—candid moments are all about details. A good candid photographer notices subtle expressions and movements. He / she can therefore anticipate moments before they happen. And all this is something they have to view with the corner of their eyes. Peripheral vision is very important. Ideally you need to have eyes at the back of your head too 🙂 . One needs to pick up on subtleties and the subtle changes in the environment around them, only then they can capture the tear before it falls.
3. Stealth mode
As soon as the wedding event begins, you have to disappear in the crowds. Shoot from the shadows and not be seen. This requires you to be calm and quiet (have your phone on silent) and make no sudden moves so as to influence the setting around you. When shooting in teams, you should be able to communicate with others in sign language or get a walkie and whisper into it. It is also respectful in most cultures to not disturb the wedding ceremony with any sound or unnecessary movement. So a very important quality to have for any good wedding photographer.
4. Technical Proficiency & Adaptability
Well this one is a no-brainer. A craftsman needs to know his tools like a samurai needs to know his katana. While creativity is crucial, technical skills are just as important. A skilled candid photographer should be able to adapt quickly to various lighting conditions in the wedding environment and then change the gear or its settings as per the occasion and the shot. A good photographer would know when to use a wide lens and when to use a flash, when to change to a faster shutter speed and when to shoot wide open.
5. Strong Work Ethic & Patience
Not many things in life with test your character truly, like an Indian wedding. Indian weddings really put things to the sword. Its an exercise in patience and understanding. With so many people involved, things are sometimes unpredictable. Sometimes the guests at the wedding are unrpredictable. From unsavoury to unkind, we see them all. But a good photographer has to look the other way and focus only on the most important task and most important people who have hired you to capture perhaps the most important day in their lives. How you perform under pressure is all the difference between a photographer who makes friends for life vs one who loses all touch after the first interaction itself.
6. EQ and humour
A candid photographer is hired because they also belong to the present and not the past. By which I mean this is someone who is in touch with times, who is aware of the world around today, and can have a conversation with their couple. This not only breaks the ice, but humour is also a great way to unlock many a tricky situations. Emotional intelligence is key at wedding. With emotions being so high at all times in all directions, you need to know when to crack a joke and when to leave the room.
7. Pursuit of excellence and creativity
I rate photographers who fail time and gain, rather than the ones who never try. I want to see the passion to create new and fresh photographs everytime they get an opportunity. Rinse and repeat is the mark of stagnation and if you’re going out of style in this market, you’ll vanish into obsolescence in no time. I want to see the fire in their bellies to try, to impress, to learn and to excel. Some of this works and most of this is where magic comes from 🙂
